I am big on natural deodorants! Our skin is our largest organ and what we put on it is just as important as what we put inside our bodies. But did you know that just switching from conventional antiperspirants and deodorants to the natural stuff sometimes leaves you with super stinky pits? I didn't!

When I first made the switch I did what I would do when switch antiperspirant brands. Just switch. But my underarms were not smelling fresh. I thought it was maybe the brand not responding well to my body, so I tried different brands, powders and even an underarm deodorant crystal. Nothing was working and I was ready to give up. Before I did I went Google diving and read some interesting blogs about...

I found so many posts about the topic. Some use charcoal, some with bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar, among other add ins. And others featuring products marketed as an underarm detox kits and solutions. Me, being the gal who loves to be resourceful, immediately ran to the bathroom to dig out the charcoal detox face mask. Yep that's me all happy after slathering it on. 🤣 Afterwards, I applied my natural deodorant and enjoyed non stinky pits.

When you use conventional products the chemicals (aluminum, phthalates, parabens & fragrance) build up in the fat cells of your armpits. Definitely not something you want happening. I won't take you down that rabbit hole, I am no expert by any means. So I will not do you the disservice of trying to explain. But, I welcome you to do your research on hormone disruptors and the chemicals above.

Your underarms will naturally begin to detox these chemicals from your body but in the process you can experience increased perspiration, and some funky smells. When you detox your pits you are speeding up that detox process. I can also help reduce or eliminate underarm stink, reduce the amount of perspiration, and provide better results from your natural deodorant.

Now you can go by some fancy armpit detoxifying branded product or Pinterest your way to the best recipe online, or do what I did. Used what I had on hand, my favorite charcoal face mask. I left it on for the longest recommended time per the instructions. Or if you find that you tend to make a lot of your own products at home already, you may already have all the ingredients. If so, I really like this recipe from Everyday with Madi Rae.

You can find my favorite ingredients below:

Bentonite Clay - Aztec Secret

Apple Cider Vinegar - Braggs

Please know that detoxing your pits is NOT going to make you smell shower fresh all the time or right away! I needed to apply the detox mask 2 times before I could use my natural deodorant and not get stinky. You may need more or less. Think about all the years you've used conventional stuff, it may take sometime to get it all out. Remember that natural deodorant is not antiperspirant! You will still sweat, but with proper detoxing it should help to reduce the amount of perspiration and the odor.
